Instead of passing gun control laws to ban guns, why not put door stops in backpacks to protect children?
1. Gun Control Laws
Since the founding of the United States, gun control laws have been in effect. There have been more than 30 amendments made to the constitution regarding firearms. These amendments cover everything from total prohibition to total freedom. The gun deaths that have occurred since their introduction are not easier. According to the CDC, there were 33,000 accidental firearm shots involving children aged 18 and under in 2013. This is almost 1 child per day. This is a common way for murder to be committed in schools that don't have supervision. Six times as many Americans are killed in gun accidents than in car accidents. Children can carry guns in schools.
2. Door Stop
This is very unfortunate. Parents may feel more secure if they arm their children. However, arming children is not the best method to stop violence. Many children with loaded weapons don’t know what to do with them. This can lead to accidental gunshots. Children should learn gun safety. Children shouldn't have access to loaded guns. We must reduce risk factors if we are to prevent violence. According to a study published in Pediatrics, having a gun in your home can increase the likelihood of homicide by one factor.
3. Gun Ownership
America has a staggering number of gun owners. Gallup estimates that over 90 million Americans own a handgun. Although a gun is not considered safer than a car, many people believe it to be more secure. Guns can be found everywhere. Guns can be found in every part of your life, including at home, work, public places, cars, and on college campuses. If you have fewer guns, it is easier to commit crimes.
